This past Saturday Michael and Seonaid were crowned King and Queen of Atlantia. Their coronation was celebrated with performance and, of course, fighting. How did I do in the fighting? I didn’t. I was running the event. ’cause, like, this seemed like a good idea. And, it was. But why? And why am I talking about this here, on a blog nominally about rapier melee and at least thematically about fencing?
Good Commanders make Good Organizers
Events are warfare drawn out over time: Various units tasked to various jobs, assessment of resources and challenges, etc, etc. And, for the most part, the better leaders of the armies tend to have an aptitude for this organization. So I put this challenge to myself.
It needed doing, and it needed doing right
What’s more, I was pretty sure I could make it happen, and well. I say this as somebody who’s autocratted one event prior to this, and it barely broke even. But my vocation is partially project management, and I wanted to prove that I wasn’t full of shit. A similar sentiment caused me to marshal War of the Wings last year.
Project Management is War in Slow Motion
You have jobs that have to get identified and get done, you have personnel resources to task with the jobs, and you have priorities. Maybe war is just project management at speed. And unlike war, you get to pick your army (I highly recommend this).
